Mexico vs Ecuador in Miyagi
Ecuador started the game positively.
Agustin Delgado headed Ecuador into the lead in the fifth minute, from a De La Cruz
cross, to put every team in Group G on three points - for the moment.
Blanco tried to put Jared Borgetti through for the equaliser five
minutes later; Mexico desperate to go into the Italian game with at least four points on
It was still too early for Ecuador to think about holding onto their
narrow lead and they too pushed up to try and extend their advantage on the counter.
Ramn Morales, on the left, crossed into Jared Borgetti, who side-footed a slight volley
home for Mexico's equaliser - 28 mins.
Mexico continued to look as though they wanted the second goal more
than Ecuador but they went in even at half-time.
Half-time: Mexico 1 - Ecuador 1
Mexico continued to have more possession at the start of the
second-half although they were taking their time with their build-up.
With plenty of space in midfield, Guerron tried to feed the ball through to Blanco.....
but with three men marking him closely, Blanco returned the ball back to Raul Guerron.....
who drove the ball hard and low past Jos Cevallos.
Once in the lead, Mexico started to look more confident going forward
as Jared Borgetti clipped the post after another attractive build-up, twenty minutes
before the final whistle.
Luis Hernndez, a big hit at France 98, was given a chance to try and increase Mexico's
lead when he came on for goalscorer Borgetti in the 77th minute..... but then Mexico had
to defend as Ecuador looked for the equaliser.
With most of the Mexican team defending their lead in the closing
minutes Ecuador had trouble getting a clear attempt on goal and saw their half-chances
drift wide or hooked away from danger.
Ecuador managed to score their first goal in a World Cup finals but
have still to earn a point as this win puts Mexico three points ahead of Italy.
After two games each, nothing is mathematically decided in Group G.
