The Football Association
Group B

England vs Paraguay in Frankfurt:
David Beckham's enticing free-kicked was flicked into his own goal by Paraguay captain, Carlos Gamarra. Not a great game but three points for the pretenders.

England vs Trinidad & Tobago in Nürnberg:
Two goals in the last ten minutes made the scoreline look respectable for England; but at this stage of the game it's about points, and England have six.

Sweden vs England in Köln:
England totally dominated the first-half but their defence was a shambles at set pieces, in the second; allowing Sweden to come back from behind twice, to keep their 38-year unbeaten record (against England) intact.

Knockout Stage

Second Round
England vs Ecuador in Stuttgart:
Maybe not an impressive performance by England but a job done; as David Beckham's exquisite free-kick, on the hour, was all that separated the sides.

Quarter-Final
England vs Portugal in Gelsenkirchen:
As so often happens in major tournaments, England play into extra-time with ten men then lose out on penalties.
