2017 Confederations Cup - Schedule and Results

Saturday, June 17th:

Group A:
Russia vs New Zealand (Saint Petersburg, 2:0)
1:0 (Michael Boxall, 31, own goal)
2:0 (Fedor Smolov, 70)

Easy start for the hosts in Saint Petersburg.

Sunday, June 18th:

Group A:
Portugal vs Mexico (Kazan, 2:2)
1:0 (Ricardo Quaresma, 34)
1:1 (Javier Hernandez, 42)
2:1 (Cedric Soares, 86)
2:2 (Hector Moreno, 90+1)

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) tried to take over the event in Kazan, disallowing one Portugal goal and giving us a long wait to decide if the Soares goal would stand.

In the end, Mexico had the final say; when Hector Moreno equalised from a corner in stoppage time.

Group B:
Cameroon vs Chile (Moscow, 0:2)
0:1 (Arturo Vidal, 81)
0:2 (Eduardo Vargas, 90+2)

Another VAR decision, just before half-time, saw Chile's Eduardo Vargas have his goal scratched from the FIFA website; for offside.

Are referees being reduced to little more than whistle blowers; a few seconds after the event?

In the final minutes of the match in Moscow, Eduardo Vargas did get the better of a VAR decision as the referee signalled that the video executives had spoken.

 Monday, June 19th:

Group B:
Australia vs Germany (Sochi, 2:3)
0:1 (Lars Stindl, 5)
1:1 (Tom Rogic, 41)
1:2 (Julian Draxler, 44pen)
1:3 (Leon Goretzka, 48)
2:3 (Tomi Juric, 56)

VAR helped the referee decide to let the second Australia goal count, as Germany made hard work of an easy game.

Wednesday, June 21st:

Group A:
Russia vs Portugal (Moscow, 0:1)
0:1 (Cristiano Ronaldo, 8)

Russia took way too long to get into the game, after an early Cristiano Ronaldo header; and missed out on the chance to qualify for the semi-finals. The hosts will need to beat Mexico, in Kazan.

Group A:
Mexico vs New Zealand (Sochi, 1:2)
0:1 (Chris Wood, 42)
1:1 (Raul Jimenez, 54)
1:2 (Oribe Peralta, 72)

New Zealand weren't totally out of the running and had a number of opportunities to pocket the full three points. The difference in the scoreline reflected the lack of finesse in the their finishing.

A mass slapping fest towards the end of the game meant the Video Assistant Referees took a while to try and sort out who did what to whom; and relay the information to the referee.

Due to the lack of conclusive decision-making, VAR still needs plenty of fine-tuning.

Thursday, June 22nd:

Group B:
Cameroon vs Australia (Saint Petersburg, 1:1)
1:0 (Andre Zambo Anguissa, 45)
1:1 (Mark Milligan, 60pen)

They huffed and they puffed, but they didn't blow the house down.

Group B:
Germany vs Chile (Kazan, 1:1)
0:1 (Alexis Sanchez, 6)
1:1 (Lars Stindl, 41)

Saturday, June 24th:

Group A:
Mexico vs Russia (Kazan, 2:1)
0:1 (Alexander Samedov, 25)
1:1 (Nestor Araujo, 30)
2:1 (Hirving Lozano, 52)

Group A:
New Zealand vs Portugal (Saint Petersburg, 0:4)
0:1 (Cristiano Ronaldo, 33pen)
0:2 (Bernardo Silva, 37)
0:3 (Andre Silva, 80)
0:4 (Nani, 90+1)

Portugal and Mexico qualify for the semi-finals.
